What is Aluminum Sheet or Plate?

Aluminium sheets, also known as aluminium plates, are the result of basic raw-form aluminium being pressed and rolled into panel form under high pressure.

Aluminum sheet can be formed and welded into simple shapes using technology similar to that for steel sheet-metal. Aluminum has excellent thermal conductivity but is much softer and less stiff than stainless steel.As a result, aluminum molds tend to have thicker walls than carbon or stainless steel molds. Aluminum is easily machined and can be relatively easily textured with grit blasting and chemical etching. Computer numerically controlled (CNC) lathes are cost-effective ways of machining aluminum when many small molds are required. Figure 5.3 shows an example of an aluminum mold made by CNC machining.

The Different of Sheet and Plate 

As aluminum moves between rolls under pressure, it becomes longer and thinner, thus resulting in Aluminum Plate or sheets. One of the main differences between Aluminum Plate and sheets is that sheet metal is under .249" thick, while plate metal is .250" and above.. Another difference between Aluminum Plate and sheets has to do with the distinct applications for which they are used.

The main application of aluminium sheets.

PACKAGING
Aluminium sheets are commonly used by the food and beverage industry for packaging. Aluminium is an ideal metal for canned goods as it's malleable and allows for ease of manufacture. It's used for both food cans and thinner, more lightweight drinks cans. One of the many advantages of using aluminium for food and drinks packaging is that it doesn't rust. Use of aluminium in cans began in 1957.
